What If We’re Awkward in Front of the Camera?
What If We’re Awkward in Front of the Camera?
Most couples don’t know what to do in front of the camera. That’s completely normal.
Being told to “just act natural” in front of a camera is somehow the fastest way to forget how to stand, smile, breathe, and exist like a normal person.
If that sounds like you, you are not alone. Most couples are not used to being photographed, and they do not need to be.
Your job is not to show up knowing how to pose. Your job is to show up as yourselves. A good photographer will help guide the rest.
Natural Photos Usually Come From Movement
Natural photos rarely happen because someone stands perfectly still and magically knows what to do. Most people do not suddenly become posing experts the second a camera comes out. If anything, that is usually when everyone forgets what hands are.
What you are feeling usually shows in the photo. Genuine happiness, comfort, love, laughter, and those little in-between moments are what make photos feel real.
Here are a few things that help photos feel more natural:
-
Wear something you feel comfortable moving in. If an outfit is too short, too tight, or constantly needs adjusting, it can make you feel uncomfortable, and that can show in photos. Choose something that lets you walk, sit, hug, laugh, and move without thinking about it the whole time.
-
Keep moving. Walking, holding hands, fixing each other’s hair, hugging, leaning in, or even just shifting your weight can make photos feel less stiff and more like real life.
-
Focus on each other. You do not have to stare at the camera the whole time. Sometimes the best photos happen when you are laughing together, talking, or just taking in the moment.
Comfort Shows in Photos
Looking natural in photos does not mean you have to know exactly what to do. It usually comes from feeling comfortable, having simple direction, and being able to focus on each other instead of the camera.
So if you feel awkward in front of the camera, that is completely normal. You do not need to arrive as professional models. You just need space to relax, move, laugh, and be yourselves.
